English version
These are water-filled siphons or U-bends that seal off air access to the sewer when the water level is sufficient. If there is too little water in the siphon, sewer odors enter the apartment and the elevator lobby. This is because, during prolonged absence or drought, the water can evaporate and cause an odor. When this is the case:
- Let all taps run for a moment (approx. 10 seconds) in the kitchen, the WC, and the bathroom, and flush the toilets.
- Fill the open siphons a) behind the washing machine b) in the heat recovery room and c) in the Eneco meter cupboard (see also the list below) each with approx. 200 ml of water and, if necessary, further seal these open siphons against evaporation with a small splash of salad oil, sunflower oil, or vinegar (do not add a pinch of salt and pepper; this is not the place for preparing a basic vinaigrette 🙂 )
Odor traps are located at various places in the apartment, near the drain in the:
- kitchen: sink and dishwasher, often combined in a single siphon
- WC: washbasin and toilet bowl
- shower room: washbasin, bath, shower and toilet bowl
- behind the washing machine
- HRV room:
- at the bottom of the heat recovery unit
- at the bottom of the heat recovery unit
- Eneco metering cupboard:
- at the very bottom in the middle, often somewhat difficult to see and reach if it is located behind and/or under insulated pipes
- Tip: Instead of refilling this siphon in the Eneco meter cupboard with a watering can or small hose, you can also simply briefly turn the top black knob of the pressure relief valve on the cold water pipe (see photo below) open and then closed again (close clockwise, open counterclockwise, if you are looking at the front of the knob).
- Furthermore, for people with a water softener in the meter cupboard, it backwashes into this siphon, so they essentially never have to refill this siphon.
- at the very bottom in the middle, often somewhat difficult to see and reach if it is located behind and/or under insulated pipes
